This is a natural, unheated tanzanite crystal specimen from Tanzania, preserved in its original state without any thermal enhancement. Unlike the vast majority of tanzanite on the market—which is routinely heat-treated to force a single dominant blue—this specimen retains its full optical complexity.
Pleochroism
Tanzanite is a strongly pleochroic gemstone, meaning it displays different colors depending on the viewing angle and light direction. In this specimen, four distinct color directions can be observed, shifting between blue, violet, yellow and secondary tones as the crystal is rotated.
This phenomenon occurs due to tanzanite’s anisotropic crystal structure, where light is absorbed differently along separate crystallographic axes. In simple terms: the crystal physically handles light in multiple ways, revealing colors that heated or heavily cut stones often lose or suppress.
